Finally fall arrived in Georgia and came in with a bang. We had freezing temperatures last night and yesterday was cloudy, very windy and cold. We moved our Fall Festival indoors and had a huge crowd. Erin and I did the Pig Race’ and the kids really enjoyed it. Since we’re usually outside, I was a bit shocked at how loudly 3 or 4 kids can yell! They think yelling at the battery operated pigs makes them move faster, so they yell and yell. If they ask, I tell them the truth, but usually it’s the parent who asks if they are noise activated.
Today should get into the low 60’s and mid 50’s tonight. We will have some days that are low 70’s toward the end of the week. We have an outside party on Saturday late afternoon/ early evening so that’ll be pleasant. Hope the 30% chance of rain goes away, tho.
Jim had loads of tests to grade so he spent all day Sunday, after church and lunch, and last Sunday grading papers. Three pages each and one child answered every math question with ‘Jesus’. Some turned in blank pages or had IDK as answers. Ugh. I wish his class had the ILEARNMATH program. That allows each child to work online at their own pace and starts at their grade level instead of 90 kids being given the same lesson even if they’re at a higher or lower level.
Wow, well this is a quiet week. Erin doesn’t work until Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most weeks she works four or even five days and I drive her back and forth. She’ll be at a Home Depot the whole month of November, those 3 days, promoting the LG brand of washers/ dryers with the pull out storage drawer. She’s got a number of jobs lined up for December. One is 3 days at the World Congress Center and has something to do with using big magnets in an artistic manner. She’ll have to show me the website or something because I can’t figure that one out. She’ll take the bus in and stay with a couple she knows who live not far from there.
Nick’s shift has changed. He only works early a.m. on Monday and the rest of the week is afternoons or until closing. It’s amazing that he’s now been with The Home Depot 4 1/2 years. I wish they would give him full time. That’s the one thing I dislike about the company is they keep most employees at part time status so they don’t have to offer benefits. He’s got a 401K, but the insurance they offer costs more than keeping him on our plan through Jim’s work and he won’t be 26 for 2 years.
My CEA was .4 over high norm this last time but I had been fighting a sinus condition that ended up making me pretty sick a day or so after the test, so that could have bumped up the numbers. That’s happened several times before and they return to normal when I’m better. I went to the doctor and she said all four sinus cavities were involved and the inside of my nose was swollen and red. I got a shot of steroids and 2 weeks worth of antibiotics. I’ll have a retest of the CEA (tumor markers) this Friday. Since it’s on Friday, I probably won’t get the results until late the next week. My oncologist had told me 7 months ago that my chances of ever having a recurrence wasn’t zero but maybe 1%. Still, as anyone who has ever had cancer can tell you, those blood tests and / or scans can cause anxiety. Actually, 49% of elevated CEA’s are false positives due to everything from illness, inflammation, dehydration, etc. I’ll be glad when it’s done.
So what do you think of The Walking Dead? I like the way this season is heading. I hope Negan is dead and gone by mid season. At least most of his group is dead. No way would I be taking hostages, tho. There’s no prison set up for such numbers. I would have been judge and jury based on what we already know and lined them up for a firing squad. Shucks. That’s gonna bite someone in the rear.
Tomorrow night is Halloween. We don’t give out candy. We volunteer at the church and people come thru here with children on flatbed trailers. We’d have to spend $100 or more for candy. Not going to happen! We’ll turn off the front lights and close the blinds. We have a very steep driveway and steep stairs so most people won’t bother if the lights are not on. It terrifies the dogs. They go crazy if the doorbell rings. We’ll take them into our room and I’ll watch TV in there. I wish they’d make it so that Halloween is on Friday night with Saturday as a rain date. That would help with school and help out home owners. Some years if it falls on Friday, because of high school football, parents decide to come on Saturday. If it’s raining, they come the next night. It can end up being 2 nights in a row!!! The City has an event. The County has an event. Businesses have events. Every church has events and on different days. Give it a rest, people! How much candy does a child need?
I’ve held off on doing phone calls to the kids who are missing more than a week of Sunday School. My class is stuffed to the gills. Yesterday we had 14 or 15. The little round tables are ‘supposed to hold six’ but when they’re working on projects, four are the most we can fit without some shoving and ‘he messed up my picture’ type concerns. So, yesterday we had five to six at a table. I never sat down, again. It’s a great problem to have, but we need more room for Sunday School/ Life Group classes. I have about 25 on roll. I don’t know what we’ll do if all my regulars show up on the same day! We can’t do the activities on our lesson list due to size ….. I’ve resorted to glue and sequins, gold coins and am close to glitter and Play-doh. LOL Oh how I miss my huge room from the last 2 years. Next year I’ll choose my age group according to the room I’ll be assigned. I don’t think Jim will help teach next year. Erin can’t be there every week either. This could get tricky!
Boy, am I just complaining today or what? Not enough caffeine I’m guessing! LOL. I’ve been trying to cut back on sugar by not drinking as much sweet tea. I haven’t lost an ounce and end up with a headache! Be right back.
Okay, I got a huge glass of sweet tea, without ice.
I let the dogs out and back in while I was in the kitchen. It’s supposed to ‘feel like 58°’, but the wind is strong enough that I was quite chilly.
Shucks. I was just thinking about Jim going on the field trip to the Aquarium this week. That made me think of him getting home late. That made me think of him missing choir or skipping supper. That reminded me that I forgot to give my donation to our Children’s Ministry Leader who is the wife of our Music Director for the food for a funeral this past Saturday. I’d better write myself a note and put it with next weeks Sunday School Lesson (which reminded me that it’s the first of the month so I don’t take snacks this coming week for my class). My mind flits from this to that.
Feathers. Need feathers. Large paper grocery bags. Must have at least 20. Someone remind me! LOL
Good Grief! How will I ever lose weight? Nothing seems to work. I think it’s my age and not enough physical activity.
Since I’ll have Erin and Jim to help cook, I think we’ll go all out this year. Make all the favorites. Jim can make Grandma Alcorn’s Hard Molasses Cookies. Erin and I can do the Sweet Potato Souffle, Dressing, Gravy, Turkey and I’m thinking Asparagus and maybe my cold Brussel Sprout salad. Going to do a web search, tho. The cookies are very hard and we’ve been talking about wanting a soft version of the same cookie. Grandma has one in the recipes she wrote out for me, but Jim doesn’t think they’re as good. Web search !! OR if you make molasses cookies, and they don’t get hard, send me your recipe! We love the molasses flavor but these are too hard to even break in half to dunk in tea! I’m afraid we’ll break our teeth eventually.
Well, I’ve got to go to the store for something for supper. I’m leaning toward turkey meatloaf and some sauteed mushrooms and a veggie. Jim’s cholesterol is high but the doctor said he can get it down with diet and walking, so cutting way down on potatoes. I need to go now or I won’t have supper ready when Jim walks in the door.
I hope you’re having good weather and enjoying the fall! I’ll let you know about my blood work and appreciate any prayers for it to be back to my norm. Come back soon for
Just A Little Talk……
